Where do French Bulldogs originate?

French Bulldog history In the 19th century, the Bulldog was a popular pet in England, mainly in the vicinity of Nottingham. Many of the lace workers from the region moved to France to work around the mid-1800s. They brought their “Toy” Bulldogs along with them.

There was a time when French women were drawn by these cute Bulldogs, especially ones with erect ears (a characteristic that was not a favorite within England). Dog breeders introduced more of these hilarious small dogs to France, where they soon became the most popular in Paris.

The dogs were called Bouledogue Francais. French breeders aimed to produce consistently upright “bat ears,” which was much to the dismay of English breeders.

Some Bulldogs are pretty small, weighing less than 25 lbs. However, on average, dogs in this breed weigh 28 lbs. and can grow to be between 11″ – 13″ in size.

  1. By the late 1800s, the breed had caught the attention of the upper class and had moved into some of the more lovely homes in France. Around this same time, American visitors to France brought several back to America and began to breed the dogs in earnest.

Amid continued controversy over which ear type was correct, an American club was formed and, in 1898, sponsored one of the most elegant dog shows (just for French Bulldogs) ever held. The gracious setting attracted wealthy spectators, and the Frenchie had soon conquered America.

Their popularity among high society soared, and by 1913 they were among the most popular show dogs in America. Many others have since passed the breed in popularity, but it still boasts some of the dogdom’s most elite and ardent fans.
